NHL Alexa App

The first league to develop a dedicated voice application.

Multi-what?

The NHL Multi-Modal Alexa App is a groundbreaking voice application, making the NHL the first major professional sports league to offer a dedicated voice skill. Designed to work seamlessly across various Alexa-enabled devices like Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, and Echo Spot (i.e. multi-modal), the app provides fans with real-time news, scores, stats, standings, and more.

Content Strategy

Amazon's "VUX" (or voice UX) provided the guardrails for the product. There were strict guidelines on user-to-Alexa exchanges. I spent hours and hours in spreadsheets detailing what a user might say, variations of that, possible responses, and based on responses which part of the decision tree to jump to.

Visual Design

Beyond voice interactions, the NHL Alexa App offers rich visual content on devices with screens. Users can view team logos, player images, and detailed broadcast information, enhancing the overall experience.

I worked closely with designers to tweak the user experience iteratively with our clients as the voice experience impacted the display assets and vic versa.

Cue the goal song.

The NHL Multi-Modal Alexa App was officially launched at CES, highlighting the league’s commitment to innovation and fan engagement. This high-profile debut showcased the app’s advanced features and its ability to integrate seamlessly with modern smart home devices.
